Bachmann Knot

Friction hitch for ascending fixed ropes in climbing.

The Bachmann Knot is a friction hitch used by climbers and arborists to ascend or descend a fixed rope. It grips tightly when loaded and slides freely when unweighted by holding the carabiner. A locking carabiner is recommended for safety. The knot works best with a round cross-section carabiner and a sling no thicker than half the diameter of the main rope.

Advantages

Provides reliable grip on a rope when weighted, easy to slide when unweighted, and works well with a carabiner for controlled movement.

Disadvantages

Requires a locking carabiner for safety. Improper wrapping (e.g., including the Double Fisherman’s Knot) can reduce effectiveness. Strain should not be applied directly to the carabiner.
