Munter Hitch

Sliding hitch for controlled descents in climbing.

The Munter Hitch is a versatile sliding hitch used in climbing and abseiling to control descent speed. It creates friction by wrapping the rope around a locking carabiner, allowing smooth braking when tension is applied to the correct side. It works equally well from either side of the rope and is particularly useful when a belay device isn't available.

Also Known As

  • Italian Hitch
  • Crossing Hitch
  • HMS
  • Tag Knot
  • MB

Advantages

Provides reliable friction for controlled descents without special equipment. Works equally well from either side of the rope and dissipates heat effectively through continuous movement.

Disadvantages

Can cause excessive rope twisting and wear. Requires careful attention to proper loading and should only be used with locking carabiners to prevent accidental release.
